Trajectory
Wellington Fagundes, born in Rondonópolis/MT, is a veterinarian graduated from the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) and holds a postgraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Brasília (UnB). In 1980, Wellington graduated and returned to Rondonópolis to open a business in the agricultural sector. In 1983, he married Mariene de Abreu Fagundes, with whom he had two children.
The businessman then entered class politics as president of the Commercial and Industrial Association of Rondonópolis for two terms, from 1983 to 1986. In 1987, he assumed the position of Municipal Secretary of Planning of Rondonópolis, during the administration of Hermínio J. Barreto. In 1990 , he ran for a seat in the House of Representatives and was elected. He was re-elected in 1994 , 1998 , 2002 , 2006 , and 2010 , being the most voted parliamentarian in Mato Grosso in the latter year, with 145,460 votes.
During his 24 years as a federal deputy (six consecutive terms), Wellington Fagundes was deputy leader of the PSDB/PTB bloc in 2001. In 2004 he was also deputy leader, this time of the PL/PSL bloc. In 2012 he was deputy leader of the PR/PTdoB/PRP/PHS/PTC/PSL/PRTB bloc. Since 2009 he has held the regional presidency of the Liberal Party (formerly the Party of the Republic) in Mato Grosso .
In the 2014 election, Wellington Fagundes was elected senator with 646,344 votes. In 2018, he ran for governor of Mato Grosso for the PR party , but was defeated by Mauro Mendes of the DEM party . In 2022, he was re-elected senator with 825,229 votes.
Wellington Fagundes has distinguished himself through his work on issues related to infrastructure, public administration, and agriculture.
In 2016, he voted in favor of the Public Spending Cap Amendment . In April 2017, he voted in favor of the Labor Reform . In 2019, he voted in favor of the Pension Reform and, in 2023, he supported the approval of the Tax Reform .
Among his main achievements are:
Co-author of Constitutional Amendment Proposal 74/2019 , which aims to transfer to municipalities the responsibility of establishing a tax on rural land ownership (ITR);
Co-author of Constitutional Amendment Proposal 19/2020 , which proposes the unification of municipal elections with state and federal elections in the country;
Rapporteur for the Infrastructure Debentures Bill , which became Law No. 14,801/2024.
Wellington Fagundes was deputy leader of the Government and leader of the Republican Party . He was also president of the Senate Committee on the Future and is currently the coordinator of the Parliamentary Front for Logistics of Transport and Storage (Frenlog).
Acknowledgements
Wellington Fagundes received the Parliamentary Excellence Award in 2023 and 2024 from the Ranking of Politicians . In 2025, he received the award again, ranking as the best senator from Mato Grosso and 17th overall.
