Tabata Amaral

Tabata Claudia Amaral de Pontes, born in São Paulo/SP on November 14, 1993, holds degrees in political science and astrophysics from Harvard University in the United States. She was raised in Vila Missionária, a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city. She distinguished herself at age 12 as a student in the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools in 2005, which earned her a scholarship to Colégio ETAPA.

From 2007 onwards, Tábata represented Brazil in international olympiads in the fields of chemistry, astronomy, and astrophysics. Her academic performance opened doors to prestigious international universities. In 2012, she received full scholarship offers from several institutions, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Princeton, Pennsylvania, and Caltech. Furthermore, Tábata was also accepted into the University of São Paulo. In 2019, already a federal deputy, she was named by the BBC as one of the 100 most influential women in the world .

Political Career

In 2014, Tabata worked as an educational activist and co-founder of the Education Map Movement , an organization dedicated to improving the quality of education in Brazil. In 2017, she founded the Acredito Movement , which focused on public policy and political renewal. She ran for office in the 2018 elections and was elected federal deputy for São Paulo by the Democratic Labour Party (PDT) with 264,450 votes, making her one of the youngest deputies and the sixth most voted in the state.

Due to her vote in favor of the Pension Reform in 2019 , which generated controversy within her own party, which requested her disaffiliation . The case went to court, and in May 2021 the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) decided that she could leave the PDT without losing her mandate . As a result, she joined the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) in September 2021. In 2022, she was re-elected by the PSB and won 337,873 votes. She ran for mayor of São Paulo in the 2024 municipal elections for the PSB, where she obtained 605,552 votes and finished in fourth place.

Performance in the House of Representatives

During her term as a federal congresswoman, Tabata Amaral's main causes have been education, gender equality, and the fight against poverty.

In March 2019, during a hearing at the Education Committee with then-Minister of Education Ricardo Vélez, Representative Tabata Amaral strongly criticized the work being done by the ministry up to that point . As a result of the session's repercussions, the Minister was dismissed a few days later . In 2020, Tabata Amaral was also one of the key figures in securing the approval of the New Fundeb, the basic education funding fund, which increases resources allocated to public education.

He voted in favor of the 2019 Pension Reform and the 2023 Tax Reform .

Among his main achievements are:

• Rapporteur for Bill 6494/19 , which seeks to modernize technical and vocational education .
• Co-author of Bill 4129/21 , which established the obligation for public authorities to develop general guidelines for climate change adaptation plans ;
• Author of Bill 45/21 , which created a savings account for high school education aimed at combating school dropout rates among low-income young students;
• Author of Bill 569/2020 , which increases paternity leave from 5 days to 60 days .

In 2023, he chaired the Parliamentary Front for Education , a position he left in February 2024 .
