Trajectory
Sérgio Fernando Moro, born in Maringá/PR on August 1, 1972, graduated in Law from the State University of Maringá (UEM) and holds a master's and doctorate in State Law from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). Before beginning his political career, Sérgio Moro served as a federal judge and gained national and international notoriety for his work leading Operation Lava Jato. He is married to federal deputy Rosângela Moro (União/SP) .
Sérgio Moro joined the judiciary in 1996 and distinguished himself through his work on high-profile cases, especially in the fight against corruption and organized crime. In 2014, he took over the Lava Jato Operation proceedings in the 13th Federal Court of Curitiba, where he coordinated the investigation of one of the largest corruption and money laundering schemes ever revealed in Brazil. The operation resulted in the arrest of high-ranking company executives, politicians from various parties, and businesspeople.
The investigations were responsible for dismantling a complex corruption scheme involving Petrobras, major construction companies, and politicians. Among their main actions, the following stand out:
Issuance of arrest warrants and coercive detention orders for several important figures, including then former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
Plea bargain agreements that revealed the extent and workings of the corruption scheme.
Significant convictions and sentences for corporate executives, politicians, and financial operators involved in the scheme.
In 2019, Sérgio Moro was appointed Minister of Justice and Public Security by then-President Jair Bolsonaro (then PSL). During his tenure as minister, Moro implemented several policies and programs aimed at strengthening the fight against crime and corruption in Brazil. Among his main actions, the following stand out:
Anti-Crime Package : Proposed a set of legislative measures to toughen penalties for violent crimes and corruption , as well as strengthen the use of instruments such as plea bargaining and international cooperation.
Transfer of leaders from criminal organizations : The government ordered the transfer of 321 leaders and members of criminal factions , such as PCC, Comando Vermelho, and Família do Norte. Isolating these leaders dismantled organized crime and opened the way for other investigations to advance.
Vigia Program: Established integrated operations, operational bases, equipment acquisition, and training for border agents to combat drug and arms trafficking.
After leaving the Bolsonaro government, Moro worked as a consultant for the firm Alvarez & Marsal for a period . Later, he decided to enter politics and joined the Podemos party, which planned to launch him as a candidate for president of the Republic . However, he announced his departure from Podemos and affiliation with União Brasil, with which he was later elected senator for the state of Paraná with 33% of the valid votes , totaling 1,953,188 votes, with his main platforms being the fight against corruption and public safety.
During his term as senator, Sérgio Moro has continued his defense against corruption and for the strengthening of institutions. He is a member of the Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Committee (CCJ) and a member of the Parliamentary Front to Combat Corruption. In 2023, he voted against the tax reform .
