Trajectory
Rui Goethe da Costa Falcão (known as Rui Falcão ) is a Brazilian politician, lawyer, and journalist , born on November 26, 1943, in Pitangui, Minas Gerais . A graduate in Law from the University of São Paulo (USP) , he had a long career in the press as a reporter and editor-in-chief before fully migrating to institutional politics. He was a founder and historical leader of the Workers' Party (PT) , presiding over the party between 1994–1995 and again from 2011 to 2017 , a period in which he helped consolidate the party as a protagonist in national politics. Falcão also served as Secretary of Government for the City of São Paulo during Marta Suplicy's (PT) administration and was elected federal deputy for São Paulo in 2000–2003 , returning to office in 2019–2023 and being re-elected for the 57th Legislature (2023–2027) in the House of Representatives .
In his political career , Rui Falcão accumulated extensive legislative and party experience within the PT ( Workers' Party), having served several terms as a state deputy in São Paulo before becoming a federal deputy. Within the party, in addition to his national presidencies of the PT, he launched a candidacy for the party's presidency in 2025 , opposing the faction supported by President Lula and seeking a reconnection with the party's social base amidst internal leadership disputes. In Parliament, he served as deputy leader of the majority in the House of Representatives in May-June 2025 , coordinating the agendas of the government's allied base, and has been a member of the Science, Technology and Innovation Committee and the Foreign Relations and National Defense Committee . He has also participated as an alternate member in committees such as Communication, reflecting his involvement in structural and strategic legislative issues.
In the National Congress , Rui Falcão has a continuous parliamentary activity and has registered approximately 155 proposals of his authorship and 1 reported in 2025 on the House of Representatives' website. In running text, his work includes the presentation of projects such as PL 5404/2023 , which establishes the National Day of Struggle for Brazilian Democracy (seeking to strengthen democratic memory and civic participation); and other initiatives of a symbolic and civic nature linked to the promotion of democracy and civil rights . He has also stood out for allocating parliamentary amendments to municipalities in São Paulo , such as resources for urban paving, the purchase of ambulances, and support for social institutions , reflecting his focus on regional development, public services, and social policies .
