Paulo Roberto Severo Pimenta is a Brazilian journalist, agricultural technician, and politician born on March 19, 1965, in Santa Maria (RS) . A member of the Workers' Party (PT) since the 1980s, he began his political career in the student movement and social struggles, holding positions in municipal executive offices before reaching the National Congress. He served two terms as a city councilor in Santa Maria , was a state representative in Rio Grande do Sul , and vice-mayor of Santa Maria before being elected federal deputy for the first time in 2002 , taking office in 2003 and being continuously re-elected until the 2023–2027 legislature, consolidating his presence as a PT leader in the Rio Grande do Sul political scene.
In institutional political activity, Pimenta stands out as one of the experienced names in the PT (Workers' Party) caucus in the House of Representatives, where he has held consecutive terms since 2003. Throughout his parliamentary career, he was leader and deputy leader of his party, participated in important committees, and was involved in key debates on social rights, public security, and communication policies. Furthermore, in the federal government, he served as Chief Minister of the Secretariat of Social Communication (Secom) on two occasions, and as Minister of the Extraordinary Secretariat for Support to the Reconstruction of Rio Grande do Sul , coordinating federal actions for the state's recovery after floods.
In his legislative work, Paulo Pimenta has presented several proposals and projects that reflect his commitment to strengthening democracy, social justice, and combating corruption and organized crime. Among the projects he has promoted are Bill 3165/2025 , which establishes Brazil-Palestine Friendship Day , and Bill 6618/2025 , which amends the Law on Criminal Organizations to toughen penalties and provide for the automatic loss of elected mandates for public officials involved with criminal organizations , as well as prohibiting compulsory retirement in such cases. He has also presented projects that promote regional cultural events, such as the inclusion of the “FRONTE(I)RA – Binational Festival of Enogastronomy” in the national tourism calendar. Throughout his career, Pimenta has also been the rapporteur for impactful matters, such as the New Drug Law , and has played a significant role in committees such as the Committee on Foreign Relations and National Defense, and the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on Arms Trafficking.
