Trajectory
Omar Aziz began his political career as a state representative for Amazonas, serving from 1991 to 1995. He then served two consecutive terms as vice-mayor of Manaus, from 1997 to 2002, and two terms as vice-governor of Amazonas, from 2003 to 2010. In 2010, he was elected governor of the state and is currently a senator for Amazonas.
His political work focuses on economic development and job creation. In the Senate, he previously chaired the Economic Affairs Committee (CAE), where he concentrated his efforts on defending the industrial model of the Manaus Free Trade Zone, an important free trade area in Amazonas. He is also a proponent of the federal government's restoration of the BR-319 highway, a project that has received criticism from environmentalists.
Omar Aziz was a member of President Jair Bolsonaro's support base. However, due to the critical situation of the Covid-19 pandemic in the state of Amazonas, he began to make strong criticisms of President Bolsonaro's management in that context.
The senator has a political connection with Senator Eduardo Braga, of the MDB/AM party, for whom he served as vice-governor, and with former federal deputy Alfredo Nascimento, of the PL/AM party, both regional presidents of their respective parties in Amazonas.
In the 2022 elections, Omar Aziz was re-elected senator for Amazonas with an impressive 766,878 votes.
