Nely Aquino (civil name Neli Pereira de Aquino ) is a Brazilian politician born on November 17, 1972, in São Sebastião do Maranhão (MG) . Before entering the federal legislature, she was a civil servant, working in the City Hall and the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais , and founded the NGO Projeto Rumo Certo , focused on serving people in situations of social vulnerability. She is married, a mother and grandmother, and is a graduate student in Sociology.
In her political career , Nely Aquino began her journey as a city councilor in Belo Horizonte , being elected in 2016 and serving as president of the Belo Horizonte City Council for two terms (2019-2020 and 2021-2022) , where she stood out for her advocacy of women's rights, the creation of thematic commissions, and municipal agendas. In 2022, she was elected federal deputy for Minas Gerais by Podemos with 66,866 votes , assuming her first term on February 1, 2023. Throughout the legislature, she was part of leadership blocs, served as vice-leader of party blocs , and was elected president of the Science, Technology and Innovation Committee of the House of Representatives, in addition to participating as a full or alternate member in committees such as Education, Sports, and the Defense of Women's Rights .
In the National Congress, Nely Aquino's work focuses on women's rights, social inclusion, public health, protection of vulnerable groups, and municipalism . She has presented projects such as PL 1512/2025 , which establishes the National Policy for Comprehensive Care for People with Trigeminal Neuralgia; PL 734/2025 , which establishes discounts on energy tariffs for people with illnesses requiring continuous use of equipment; PL 775/2025 , which creates the Women's Health Voucher Program; PL 3662/2025 , which increases penalties for bodily harm against women based on gender; PL 2549/2024 , which creates the "Women's City Seal"; PL 3033/2023 , which proposes reserving positions in public service exams for people with disabilities; and PL 4311/2023 , which grants amnesty from ANTT fees to transportation companies during the pandemic. Bill 4814/2024 , regarding the regulation of sprays and stun guns for personal defense; and Bill 1694/2024 , which establishes a national symbol for the identification of rare diseases. She also secured approved reports such as those for Bill 1084/2023 (rights of pregnant athletes and mothers) and the substitute for Bill 4712/2019 (National Program for the Prevention of Depression). Throughout her term, she has presented dozens of proposals and has actively positioned herself on social and citizenship issues.
