Marcel van Hattem

Marcel van Hattem was born on November 8, 1985, in São Leopoldo (Rio Grande do Sul). He holds a degree in International Relations from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), a master's degree in Political Science from Leiden University (Netherlands), and specializations in Journalism, Media, and Globalization from the universities of Aarhus (Denmark) and Amsterdam (Netherlands). Since his youth, he has been involved in local politics and served as a city councilor in Dois Irmãos (RS) at a young age, in 2004. His academic and international background gives him the profile of a politician who articulates liberal agendas, individual freedom, reduction of the State, and transparency in public management.

Political Career

In his political career, Marcel van Hattem was elected state deputy of Rio Grande do Sul in 2014 (taking office in 2015) as the youngest member of the Legislative Assembly of that state during the 2015-2018 legislature. In 2018, he joined the Partido Novo (NOVO) party and, in the federal elections of that year, was elected federal deputy for Rio Grande do Sul with 349,855 votes, being the most voted in the state in that election. He assumed his mandate in the House of Representatives in February 2019 and was re-elected in 2022 for the 2023-2027 legislature.

Performance in the House of Representatives

In the National Congress, Marcel van Hattem has distinguished himself through agendas that emphasize economic freedom, tax reduction, simplification of the State, public security, and combating privileges. He was the leader of the Novo party's caucus in the House of Representatives, participated in important committees such as the Foreign Relations and National Defense Committee (CREDN), and was a member of financial oversight and control committees. He also proposed and supported projects related to the autonomy of the Central Bank, a leaner public administration, and other structural reforms.

His legislative performance is quantitatively impressive: according to data from his office, in 2024 he had zero absences in plenary sessions and participated in hundreds of proposals, with results for his state, Rio Grande do Sul, especially in response to natural disasters; he led external commissions to monitor the damage from floods in the state and went to the Netherlands to study water management. He also received international and national recognition, such as the Order of Rio Branco, granted by the federal government, in recognition of his services and civic virtues.
