Trajectory
Luiza Erundina de Sousa is a Brazilian politician and social worker , born on November 30, 1934, in Uiraúna (Paraíba) . She graduated in Social Work from the Federal University of Paraíba and holds a master's degree in Social Sciences. She has been involved since a young age in labor, community, and social movements that defend human rights and social justice. Erundina was the first woman elected mayor of São Paulo (1989–1992) , a position that gave her great national prominence. Since 1999, she has served as a federal deputy for the state of São Paulo, currently in her seventh term (2023–2027) representing the PSOL party in the PSOL-REDE Federation .
In her political career , Erundina began as a city councilor in São Paulo in 1983 , then served as a state representative (1987–1988) , mayor of the city of São Paulo, and Minister of the Federal Administration Secretariat in the Itamar Franco government (1993) before establishing herself as a member of the National Congress in 1999. Throughout her career, she has been a member of several parties, including the PT, PSB, and PSOL, and has always based her work on defending the working class, minorities, and the excluded , being recognized for her commitment to equal rights and social justice and for leading fronts and commissions such as the Parliamentary Front for Freedom of Expression and the Right to Communication with popular participation (Frentecom) .
In the National Congress , Erundina has a long and productive parliamentary career, with 123 proposals authored by her and 4 reported on in 2025, registered on the House of Representatives' website . In summary, her work in the House of Representatives includes participation as a member of the Committees on Science and Technology, Communication and Informatics, and Participatory Legislation , in addition to being part of the women's caucus and various thematic fronts focused on social justice, women's rights, and human rights . Among the projects presented are PL 3357/2025 , which provides for in-person oral arguments by lawyers to strengthen the defense's role in judicial proceedings ; PL 2928/2022 , which proposes free public passenger transport during election periods ; and her ongoing work on structural issues such as PEC 25/2023 , which proposes the creation of a Unified Mobility System (SUM) based on the universal right to public transport in the country.
