Leila Barros, also known as Leila of Volleyball, is a Brazilian politician and athlete affiliated with the PDT party. She was elected senator for the Federal District in 2018 with an impressive 467,787 votes.
Before entering politics, Leila Barros had a distinguished career as a volleyball player for the Brazilian Women's National Volleyball Team. She won bronze medals at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, as well as a gold medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. Leila was also recognized as the best player in the Volleyball Grand Prix in two editions. Subsequently, she played beach volleyball and became a sports commentator before entering politics.
Leila Barros, born in Taguatinga, an administrative region of the Federal District, is married to athlete Emanuel Rego, with whom she has a son. As a former volleyball player, issues related to sports are one of her main political causes. She sees sports as a mechanism for social redemption and dedicates herself to promoting policies and initiatives that encourage sports practice, especially among young people.
Furthermore, Leila Barros is also dedicated to cross-cutting issues such as combating crime and supporting education and job placement. Her political work seeks to contribute to social development and improve the quality of life for citizens.
