Josias Gomes

Josias Gomes da Silva was born on October 14, 1956 , in Amaraji (PE). He is an agronomist, graduated from the Federal University of Paraíba (UNIPB) in 1980, and actively participated in the student movement as president of the Academic Directorate of Agricultural Sciences, leading the first strike in the state 14 years after the 1964 military coup.

Political career

From his early days in the Workers' Party, of which he is a founding member and presided over the Bahia state branch, Josias played a leading role in labor movements and historic campaigns such as "Diretas Já" (Direct Elections Now), in addition to coordinating several regional campaigns in Bahia. He was first elected federal deputy in 2002 and re-elected in 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022, currently serving his fifth term. Between 2015 and 2022, he took several leaves of absence to hold positions in the Bahia state government, such as Secretary of Institutional Relations and Secretary of Rural Development in the governments of Rui Costa.

Performance in the National Congress

In the National Congress, Josias Gomes maintains a consistent track record in defending issues related to family farming, education, public health, and regional development. In 2025, he presented 45 proposals and was not the rapporteur for any project, in addition to participating in 204 roll-call votes. He is a full member of the Committee on Agriculture, Livestock, Supply and Rural Development , a central theme in his history, and an alternate member of the Committees on Mines and Energy and National Integration and Regional Development, areas that complement his regional work. Furthermore, he has been the deputy leader of the PT (Workers' Party) caucus since 2023, reinforcing his political articulation and commitment to the federal government.
