Trajectory
Senator Renan Calheiros is a traditional politician with a long career spanning over 30 years. He is currently serving his fourth term as senator, having been re-elected in 2018 with over 621,000 votes, making him the longest-serving senator in the Senate in terms of continuous terms. Before becoming a senator, he also served as a state representative for Alagoas (1979-1983) and as a federal deputy (1983-1991), where he was the leader of the Collor government's base. Furthermore, he was Minister of Justice in the Fernando Henrique Cardoso administration between 1998 and 1999.
Renan Calheiros served as president of the Senate in three distinct periods: from 2005 to 2007, from 2013 to 2015, and from 2015 to 2017. In 2019, he ran again for president of the Senate, but ended up withdrawing during the electoral process, paving the way for the election of Senator Davi Alcolumbre, from Amapá.
In the previous legislature, Renan Calheiros was a voice of opposition to the Bolsonaro government. As rapporteur of the Pandemic CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry), he stood out for making pronouncements and criticizing the President of the Republic regarding his handling of the issue, international relations, and the administration and use of public resources.
As a congressman since 1995, Renan Calheiros remains a relevant political figure on the national scene. He has political allies, including his son, who was elected senator in the general elections, Senator Jader Barbalho (MDB/PA), and Senator Katia Abreu (PP/TO).
His multiple stints as president of the Senate and his participation as rapporteur of the Pandemic CPI demonstrate his influence and ability to build alliances on the national political scene.
