José Nelto

José Nelto Lagares das Mercez was born on September 19, 1960, in Tiros, Minas Gerais. He is a lawyer by training, with a higher education degree.

Political career

Nelto began his political career as a city councilor in Goiânia, being elected to this position three times and eventually presiding over the City Council. Later, he served several consecutive terms as a state representative in Goiás. In 2018, he was elected federal deputy for Goiás by the Podemos party, with 61,809 votes. In 2022, he was re-elected as a federal deputy, this time affiliated with the Progressistas (PP) party, with over 100,000 votes. He also held party leadership positions and served as deputy leader of the government in the House of Representatives at certain times.

Performance in the National Congress

José Nelto has authored several legislative proposals in 2025; for example, he already has thirty-six projects of his own. He is a member of the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ), one of the most influential committees in the House of Representatives, where he assesses the constitutionality of proposals being processed in Congress. He was elected to represent the Goiás delegation for the 2025-2026 term as coordinator of this delegation, working on political articulation between federal deputies and senators from Goiás. He also served as deputy leader of the Government in the House of Representatives. He demonstrates a municipalist profile, with frequent presence in Goiás cities, interaction with mayors, and public positions on relevant parliamentary agendas.
