Trajectory
João Felipe de Souza Leão was born on February 27, 1946 , in Recife (PE) , and graduated in Agronomy from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) in 1968. A businessman and politician with a long career, he began his public career as mayor of Lauro de Freitas (BA) , later served as Secretary of Infrastructure and Chief of Staff of the State , and was vice-governor of Bahia for two terms alongside Rui Costa.
João Leão consolidated his political career in Bahia and on the national stage, with a track record marked by advocacy for infrastructure projects and securing investments for the state. He was first elected federal deputy in 1995 and has held successive mandates since then, currently serving his sixth consecutive term . In addition, he was vice-governor of Bahia between 2015 and 2022, a period in which he also held strategic positions in the state government, especially related to economic development and infrastructure.
In the House of Representatives, João Leão serves as a full member of the Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Committee (CCJC) and as an alternate member of the Agriculture, Livestock, Supply and Rural Development Committee . His parliamentary agenda focuses on strengthening the infrastructure and economic development of Bahia, particularly through the allocation of resources via amendments to the Multi-Year Plan (PPA), the Budget Guidelines Law (LDO), and the Annual Budget Law (LOA). These amendments have secured billions of dollars in investments in strategic projects, such as the Salvador-Itaparica Bridge and the duplication of highways.
He also allocated resources to the health sector and to municipalities in the interior of the state, in addition to working with mayors in Bahia to obtain federal investments. Among his recent initiatives are the release of funds for local infrastructure equipment, such as the acquisition of machinery for municipalities, and advocating for faster approval of the Budget Guidelines Law. His work is recognized for its strong political articulation and for seeking resources that boost regional development in Bahia.
