Trajectory

Damares Regina Alves was born on March 11, 1964, in Paranaguá/PR. She graduated in Law from the now-defunct Faculdades Integradas de São Carlos (FADISC).

In São Carlos, Damares Alves worked at the Municipal Tourism Secretariat, where she served in the former COMTUR (Municipal Tourism Commission), during the administration of Mayor Vadinho de Guzzi . In 1999, shortly before obtaining her registration with the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB-SP), in the São Carlos sub-section, she began her career in Brasília as a junior parliamentary assistant.

Damares Alves was a pastor at the Church of the Foursquare Gospel and at the Lagoinha Baptist Church in Belo Horizonte. In addition, she coordinated the "Proteger Program," an educational project created by Guilherme Zanina Schelb, a regional public prosecutor in the Federal District and member of ANAJURE (an organization where Damares served as Director of Parliamentary Affairs), known for advocating the project nicknamed " School Without Political Parties ."

Political Career

In 1995, Damares Alves joined the Brazilian Progressive Party (PPB) and, in 1999, moved to Brasília, where she began working as a parliamentary assistant in the office of Congressman Josué Bengtson (PTB-PA) , her uncle and pastor of the Quadrangular Gospel Church. Throughout her career, she was a parliamentary advisor for six years in the office of Congressman Henrique Afonso (PT) , in addition to having worked with Congressmen Arolde de Oliveira (PSD) and João Campos (PRB) , and with Senator Magno Malta (PL) . In 2019, after more than 20 years of experience in Congress, Damares was appointed Minister of Women, Family and Human Rights by then-President Jair Bolsonaro . Among her main achievements as minister are:

National Plan to Combat Femicide: Launched to intensify the fight against violence against women, with integrated actions between different ministries and significant investments;

Brazilian Mothers Program: An initiative focused on the comprehensive protection of pregnant women and motherhood, assisting women in the exercise of motherhood from conception to childcare, including reintegration into the labor market;

National Strategy for Women's Entrepreneurship - Brazil for Them: Considered the largest program for the productive inclusion of women in the country, providing microcredit and courses to encourage women's entrepreneurship.

In 2022, she was elected senator for the Federal District by the Republicanos party with 644,904 votes.

Performance in the National Congress

Damares Alves has distinguished herself through her work on issues related to child safety, the protection of women's rights, and the promotion of family values.

In 2023, he supported the approval of the Tax Reform .

Among his main achievements are:

  • Co-author of Constitutional Amendment Proposal 39/2024 , which creates rules regarding disciplinary complaints against Supreme Court justices;

  • Co-author of Bill 3190/2023 , which aims to improve and promote microcredit and microfinance;

  • Co-author of PLP 225/2023 , which provides for the granting of loans with public funds to foreign countries.

Acknowledgements

Damares Alves received the Parliamentary Excellence Award in 2023 and 2024 from the Ranking of Politicians . In 2025, she received the award again, ranking as the best senator from the Federal District and the 4th best senator overall.
