Alice Portugal

Alice Mazzei Portugal de Oliveira , known as Alice Portugal , was born in Salvador, Bahia, on January 16, 1959. She graduated in Pharmacy from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), where she was also an activist in the student movement, eventually becoming a leader of the National Union of Students (UNE). Before entering institutional politics, she worked as a pharmacist and union activist, strongly advocating for health and education workers. Married and a mother of one daughter, she built her public career linked to social, union, and educational issues.

Political career

Alice Portugal began her political career with the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) , to which she has been affiliated since her youth.

She was elected state representative in Bahia in 1994 , serving three consecutive terms until 2006. During this period, she stood out for her advocacy for public health, education, and the rights of public employees.

In 2006, she was elected federal deputy for Bahia , a position to which she has been successively re-elected (2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022). She is currently in her fifth term in the House of Representatives.

Performance in the National Congress

In the House of Representatives, Alice Portugal established herself as one of the leading voices on education, culture, health, and women's rights .

She has chaired and reported on projects in committees such as the Education Committee , the Culture Committee , and the Social Security and Family Committee . She also served as coordinator of the Bahia delegation in the National Congress.

Among its main causes are:

• Advocating for free, quality public education, with recognition and appreciation for teachers;

• Expansion of the Unified Health System (SUS) and strengthening of public health;

• Promoting Brazilian culture and encouraging cultural policies;

• Advocating for women's rights, gender equality, and combating domestic violence;

• Support for public service workers, especially those in health and education.
