Alfredo Gaspar

Alfredo Gaspar is a former public prosecutor, lawyer, and Brazilian politician affiliated with the Liberal Party. He served twice as Secretary of Public Security of Alagoas. He worked as a public prosecutor for 24 years and held the position of Chief Prosecutor of the Public Ministry of Alagoas. He resigned from this position to become Secretary of State for Social Defense in the government of Renan Filho (MDB) between 2015 and 2016, when he returned to the Public Ministry.

Elections

He resigned from his position as a public prosecutor in the Public Ministry in 2020 to run for mayor of Maceió with the MDB party. He was defeated in the second round by João Henrique Caldas (JHC), who obtained 58.64% of the valid votes, equivalent to 222,147 votes, against 41.36% for Alfredo Gaspar, which represented 156,704 votes .

In January 2021, he was reappointed by Governor Renan Filho (MDB) as Secretary of Public Security for the State of Alagoas. He resigned in March 2022 to run for the House of Representatives.

In 2022, he disagreed with Renan Filho's decision to appoint state deputy Paulo Dantas as "interim governor," which led Gaspar to switch from the MDB to União Brasil. He was elected with 102,039 votes , being the second most voted candidate in Alagoas, behind only Arthur Lira (PP), with his main platforms being public safety, reducing violence, and combating crime and corruption.

Performance in the National Congress

In 2023, Alfredo Gaspar was one of 30 parliamentarians present at all legislative sessions . He was part of the Committees on Constitution, Justice and Citizenship, Foreign Relations, Public Security, Human Rights, and the Parliamentary Inquiry Commissions on Financial Pyramids, the Landless Workers' Movement (MST), and the Working Group on Violence in Schools . Throughout the year, he presented 370 legislative proposals. He approved a bill establishing obligations for companies responsible for environmental crimes . Another approved bill increased penalties for property crimes . He is responsible for coordinating the Commission that monitors the ground subsidence in Maceió . He is the proponent of the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission to investigate Organized Crime .
