Sóstenes Cavalcante

Sóstenes Silva Cavalcante, born in Maceió/AL on January 16, 1975, is a theologian with family roots in the Baixada Fluminense region, in Duque de Caxias/RJ. He holds a bachelor's degree in Theology with a specialization in Missiology and was ordained to the pastoral ministry at the age of 22, serving for eight years in missionary work in Argentina. Upon returning to Brazil, he served for five years as director of events at the Vitória em Cristo Association, alongside Pastor Silas Malafaia.

Political career

Sóstenes Cavalcante began his political career in 2014, when he was elected federal deputy for Rio de Janeiro by the then PSD party, with 104,697 votes. He was re-elected in 2018, this time by the DEM party, and again in 2022, by the PL party, serving his third consecutive term.

Performance in the National Congress

Sóstenes Cavalcante has previously chaired the Evangelical Parliamentary Front of the National Congress and the Family Statute Commission, in addition to serving as vice-president of the CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) on the Rouanet Law. Between 2023 and 2025, he was the 2nd Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the House of Representatives. Since February 2025, he has been the leader of the PL (Liberal Party) in the House of Representatives, one of the largest blocs in the House.
