Trajectory
Humberto Costa, a public health physician, played a significant role in the student movement and in the formulation of public health policies during the consolidation of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). Before holding elected office, he participated in the structuring of health policies in Pernambuco and at the national level.
He was a city councilor in Recife, a state representative, a federal representative, and Minister of Health in Lula's first government. In 2010, he was elected senator, and re-elected in 2018. Throughout his career, he held leadership positions within the party and was part of the PT's political coordination at different times.
In the Senate, she plays a central role in issues of public health, financing of the SUS (Brazilian public healthcare system), social policies, and the health budget. She also performs political coordination and party leadership functions, participating in important negotiations in Congress.
