Trajectory
Geraldo Junio do Amaral, known as Junio Amaral or Cabo Junio Amaral, was born in Belo Horizonte/MG and raised in Contagem/MG, in the Metropolitan Region, where he grew up and established his family. He is a military police officer, serving for over 10 years in Minas Gerais, with a degree in Law and postgraduate studies in the area of public security.
Junio Amaral began his journey with the founding of the Direita Minas movement in 2015, which has consolidated itself over the years as the largest conservative political movement in the state of Minas Gerais, leading numerous street demonstrations and other acts of right-wing political activism in Minas Gerais.
In 2018, he ran for federal deputy for the Social Liberal Party (PSL), inspired by Eduardo Bolsonaro and supported by Jair Bolsonaro, being elected with 158,541 votes and, in 2022, re-elected by the Liberal Party (PL).
After his election in 2018, he was part of a delegation of newly elected deputies who traveled to the United States to meet with philosopher Olavo de Carvalho, one of the intellectual mentors of the new Brazilian right.
Internationally, the congressman is the president of the Brazil-Taiwan Parliamentary Front in the National Congress and the main person responsible for parliamentary diplomacy between Brazil and Taiwan, one of the largest Asian powers and one of the most liberal countries in the world.
In 2024, representing conservatives and promoting the advancement of the right in his city, he ran for mayor of Contagem/MG with the aim of confronting and opposing the Workers' Party (PT), finishing in 2nd place in the election and obtaining a total of 120,000 votes.
Throughout his political and professional career, which involved public security, as well as the ideological wing, his actions were guided by conservative principles in various parliamentary committees of the House of Representatives: since 2019 he has been a member of the Public Security and Combating Organized Crime Committee, where he held the 2nd vice-presidency in 2022, as well as being a member of the Human Rights Committee, the Environment Committee, the Financial Oversight and Control Committee, the Joint Budget Committee, among others.
In the Public Security Committee, he reported on Bill 732/2022, authored by the Bolsonaro Government, which improves criminal legislation to strengthen the fight against violent crime.
In the House of Representatives's plenary session, he was responsible for approving the first proposal deliberated in Congress that prohibits the use of neutral language in public administration, within the scope of Bill 6.256/2019.
He was also responsible for several actions in defense of strengthening public security, such as Bill 643/2020, which he authored and which was approved in the Plenary in 2022, allowing for an aggravating circumstance for the crime of theft in situations of public calamity or disaster.
Acknowledgements
Junio Amaral received the Parliamentary Excellence Award from the Politicians Ranking in every year of the 57th Legislature (2023-2026), being the 3rd best parliamentarian in Minas Gerais and 27th in the overall ranking for the Legislature.
